To the editor,

On behalf of the Mount Airy Elks Lodge and Hope Valley Inc., I would like to personally thank Lt. VanHoy and other officers of the Mount Airy Police Department, Sgt. Bingman of the Pilot Mountain Police Department, Sgt. Jamey Goad and others of the Surry County Sheriff’s Office for their help with the benefit poker run held on Nov. 8.

Escorting the riders and helping us get through several intersections safely was going way above and beyond their call to duty.

This benefit ride for Hope Valley was enjoyed by all and provided a little help for a most worthy cause.

Again, thanks very much for your help. You made our day and hopefully, helped to make the day for those at Hope Valley.

My best regards to you all.

Elks Care,

Terry Scott

Mount Airy

To the editor,

I was very disappointed by the coverage last weekend done by the Mt Airy News of the North Surry High School Volleyball state championship. I canot believe that you didnt send a reporter to Raleigh for this hugely important game for these girls and school. There wasn’t even a picture from the actual game.

That team deserved a great amount of coverage that they didnt receive. They were undefeated and only lost a couple of sets all season long. This is awesome!

As a lifelong citizen of Mt Airy and a 1993 graduate of NSHS, I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. When Mt Airy High School won the football championship last year, you guys put the article on the front page and the town even gave them a parade. I realize that volleyball is not as big of a sport (revenue) wise, but those young ladies deserved much more than they got.

I was awfully proud of the team and am I sure the North Surry community was awfully disappointed too.

To whom it may concern,

After hearing of North Surry’s Volleyball state title, I was excited to purchase a paper to read of their awesome success. I was utterly shocked and disappointed in the lack of coverage your paper chose to write. I feel your paper is completely bias and this is the reason I do not subscribe regularly to this paper. Last year when Mt. Airy won the state title in football it made front page coverage. What does that say about the paper? These girls deserve much better than what you did for them. Why are they not as important as the football team? The guys did deserve front page coverage. Their success was fantastic. But, if you do something for one team, you need to do it for all. I think you need to apologize and give the girls what they deserve.

Regards,

Ashley Eades

To the editor,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Flip Rees. Having grown up in Mount Airy, I have nothing but wonderful memories of my small town. Growing up, on Saturdays, it was the big day. You have to remember this was the early 70’s, kids were still crusing Lebanon Street, we still stayed out late in the summer, until Mama called, and on Sunday night, you were in your pj’s, waiting for Wonderful World of Disney to come on. But Saturday was the day, in the summer. Mama dropped me off on Main Street, in front of Daddy’s store, the day was wide open, the first two people you saw, was my grandpa Leonard on one side of Main, and Flip Rees on the other, watching, waiting, for the shoppers to come in and buy a suit, a shirt, or in Grandpa case, maybe a ring or watch. It was exciting to me, all the stores I could go into, only Lambs Drugstore had the icecream I wanted, chocolate, on a come, then cross the street, stand in front of the pool-hall door, looking down those long steps, then hearing, “get outta here, I’ll call your daddy,” run, heart beating to Hinkles, lokoing at all the school supplies, paper, and wondering, then on to Roses, the double feature at the cinema, run thru the alley’s but always, you could come back around, look at the big clock, and see those two men, on the corner, or in front of the mirrors, and know, it was Saturday, big day, and everything was all right, everything was always all right.
