STUART, Va. — Two people were arrested on Tuesday in Patrick County, Va., and charged with accessory after the fact in connection with the shooting death of four men in Mount Airy on Nov. 1.

Kathy Lee Young Barnette, 56, and son, Gregory Brandon Holt, 34, both of Claudville, were arrested without incident at the suspects’ residence. Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith reported that they were arrested on fugitive of justice warrants after his office received information from the Mount Airy Police Department that they held numerous felony arrest warrants on both subjects for accessory after the fact of murder.

According to Smith, Maj. Garry Brown and Investigator Darrell Rorrer located and arrested Holt and Barnette at approximately 3:45 p.m. Both subjects are now being held in the Patrick County Jail without bond.

Sharon Burchette with the Mount Airy Police Department said the charges stem from the continuing investigation into the shooting that took place in the Wood’s Television parking lot on Nov. 1, but no further information is being released at this time.

Burchette also said, if needed, extradition proceedings would begin for Holt and Barnette to bring them back to North Carolina.

There is speculation that the pair have been arrested for aiding the murder suspect in renting a hotel room, but it is currently unclear whether that is the case.

As was reported in The News last week, an official of a motel in Henry County said that a white male between 25 and 30 years old rented a room for Marcos Chavez Gonzalez after the shooting. Gonzalez, 26, was captured at the Super 8 motel in Henry County on the morning following the shooting and was returned to North Carolina.

Lt. Kimmy Nester of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office said last week that authorities had determined that Gonzalez got a ride to the motel with someone the night of the shooting and used an assumed name. Nester did confirm then that the man who registered at the motel has a Patrick County address.

Gonzalez is accused of murdering four men in Mount Airy on Nov. 1, using a high-powered assault rifle that has not yet been recovered. He is being held without bond on four counts of first-degree murder. The victims of the shooting were Javier Manuel Martinez, 21; Juan Manuel Martinez, 26; Victor Alfonso Martinez-Jimemiz, 22; and Marcos Oviedo Aguilar, 22.

On Friday, Barbara Gonzalez of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said that Gonzalez had been deported but re-entered the country illegally.

At last report, city police have still not arrived at a motive for the crime.

The felony arrests are not Gonzalez’s first, as he was imprisoned after a 2002 conviction for kidnapping a minor and probation violation.
