The NCHSAA released its 2009 football playoff brackets Saturday, and the Northwest 1A/2A is well represented.
Mount Airy (11-0, 7-0) will have another chance at a 1A title, as the Granite Bears picked up the No. 1 seed in the “small A” Western bracket.
The Bears, who defeated rival East Surry 30-6 Friday for the Northwest 1A/2A Conference championship, will face No. 16 seeded Rosewood (2-7) next Friday at Wallace Shelton Stadium on Mount Airy’s campus.
The Bears could face conference foe North Stokes (6-4) in the second round, as the No. 8 seeded Vikings take on No. 9 seeded West Columbus (5-5) in Danbury.
Elkin (9-1) is at the opposite side of the west bracket from the Bears as the No. 2 seed, setting the table for a possible rematch of last season’s Western Regional final.
The Buckin’ Elks will take on No. 15 seeded Union Academy (2-7-1) and could meet either Cherokee (6-4) or North Duplin (4-6) in the second round.
Manteo (10-0) is the top seed out east, with Creswell (10-0), and Weldon (9-1) taking the second and third seeds.
Last season’s east champion Williamston (9-1) is the No. 5 seeded team in the east and will take on Southside (4-6), with a possible second round matchup against Wallace-Rose Hill (9-1).
In the 1AA bracket, East Surry (10-1) all but certainly dropped several spots after its loss to Mount Airy Friday, but is still in a strong position to advance with the No. 6 seed.
The Cardinals will take on former conference foe No. 11 seeded East Wilkes (6-4) out of the Mountain Valley Conference.
East has a possible second round matchup with the winner of matchup of the No. 3 seed Hendersonville (9-2) and No. 14 seeded Mitchell (4-7).
Also representing the Northwest 1A/2A are Bishop McGuinness (9-2) with the No. 10 seed in the 1AA West.
Albemarle (11-0) is the top seed in the 1AA West bracket while Monroe (11-0) is the No. 2 seed.
In the 2A bracket, Surry Central just made itself playoff eligible Friday with a win over South Stokes. For that, the Golden Eagles have the luxury of being the No. 16 seed in the west. Central won’t have to travel far however, with the Golden Eagles’ first round opponent just a short ride down Highway 601 in former conference rival, No. 1 seeded Starmount.
All first round games are scheduled to be held next week with 7:30 p.m. start times.
