Authorities are continuing to search for a gunman who allegedly robbed a Mount Airy drugstore of OxyContin.
The incident occurred about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday at Gates Pharmacy at 364 N. South St. near the Independence Boulevard intersection.
A white male entered the business, displayed a handgun and demanded drugs, according to city police.
He subsequently took 340 40-milligram tablets of OxyContin, a powerful prescription painkiller that is frequently abused. The value of the drugs stolen is listed as $2,209.
The suspect fled the scene on foot and later was spotted further up Independence Boulevard near McDonald’s, but managed to elude arrest. He was still at large Wednesday night, police said.
At the time of the armed robbery, the man was wearing a cowboy hat. He is believed to be in his 40s, based on the description supplied by police.
No injuries occurred among store personnel during the incident.
