In the 70th minute, Damian Padron scored an unassisted goal. Nine minutes later, older brother Jorge found the net from 20 yards out. Goalie Dallas Hartley recorded his seventh shutout, as he made five saves.
The Cardinals (12-7-1, 8-5-1 Northwest 1A/2A) beat the Greyhounds by the same count when the teams met earlier this season. The game was originally slated to be played Tuesday at East Surry, but nasty weather coupled with North Surry’s obligation to an already-scheduled Wednesday match pushed it to Thursday at North Surry because the Cardinals’ junior varsity football team was hosting the Greyhounds on the athletic field. As last night marked the end of the regular season, the game had to be played somewhere.
For any other game that would not have been a problem, but last night’s contest was originally supposed to be East Surry’s senior night, so Cardinals coach Bill Hart had to come up with a way to honor seniors Jorge Padron, Jonah Easter, Jesse Smith, Jorge Salas, Chris Hardy and team manager Thomas York.
“What I did was I called all the parents and we had a little bit of a ceremony in the (East Surry) library (Tuesday) night,” Hart said. “Our guys were disappointed (about the senior night switch), but in the end, we wanted to get the game in and we’re happy we did.”
