“We played a much better match than Saturday (against J.C. Draughn) and we had to because North was as good as promised,” North Surry coach Shane Slate said. “It was exciting volleyball played by both teams and a good atmosphere with energy from the crowd.”
The Greyhounds (29-0, 17-0) won by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22.
“Four things stood out for me in the match,” Slate said. “No. 1, I thought our offense had nice balance and we were smart with aggression when we had the ball at the net. No. 2, (Courtney) Campbell absolutely pounded the ball at them tonight and forced them to adjust the defense. No. 3, (Morgan) Bunker had serving streaks of five points early in games one and three that bailed us out of slow starts. No. 4, our blockers forced their attackers to adjust and be unable to take big swings so our perimeter defenders could give us better passes.”
The Greyhounds trailed early in the first set until Bunker started serving and Campbell rotated to the net. Campbell, who had a team-high 17 kills, laid down several booming spikes that the North Henderson defenders had no answer for. Bunker, who was 17-of-18 from the service line with a pair of aces, had seven kills along with Summer Robertson.
Northwest 1A/2A Conference Player of the Year Kara Hodges had 35 assists, as she mixed in a few kills and slick setups to confuse the North Henderson defenders.
Bunker and Nicole Rumplasch had four blocks apiece. Sara Parker had seven digs, followed by Campbell with six and Emily Culler with five. Culler served a perfect 12-for-12.
Up next for the Greyhounds is a 6 p.m. match at Bandys Thursday. The Trojans won a thriller against Forbush last night, rebounding from an 0-2 deficit for a 3-2 victory.
