The center received 200 doses of the injectable vaccine yesterday, and the vaccine is available by appointment only. Appointments can be set for this Friday, Monday, or Tuesday.
“As the vaccine comes in, we want to get it out the door,” said Thomas Williams, media relations specialist with the center.
This H1N1 vaccine batch will be offered to people in the high risk categories as defined by the Centers for Disease Control. These high risk populations include pregnant women, health care and emergency medical service workers, people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months old, youth ages 6 months to 24 years old, and adults ages 25 to 64 who have chronic health disorders.
The health department is taking appointments beginning today. People can call 401-8593 or 401-8594 to make an appointment.
The health department had previously received one shipment of the nasal spray H1N1 flu vaccine. That type of vaccine was only offered to people ages 49 and younger due to the live virus strain in it. Williams said more people might want to take the injectable vaccine.
“We do expect an ample supply soon, hopefully within the next two weeks,” Williams said.
