Multiple violations have been filed against a woman who allegedly assaulted Mount Airy’s police chief after trying to steal a pumpkin from a fall display downtown.

Kiera Renee Medley, 25, of 522 Quaker Road, is accused of assault on a government official; resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer; and larceny stemming from the Friday incident at 100 N. Main St.

All the charges are misdemeanors.

Medley was charged after Police Chief Dale Watson witnessed her allegedly taking the pumpkin from a seasonal display at a city-owned site at the corner of North Main and West Pine streets known as Lowry Park.

Watson, who happened to be in the area at the time, saw her place the pumpkin into a baby carriage, according to the arresting officer.

“And when he approached her, she resisted,” added Officer Carlos Garcia. “She started yelling and screaming.”

The woman, who had a baby in the carriage at the time, allegedly dug her fingernails into the police chief’s hand during the incident, which led to the assault violation.

After being taken into custody, Medley was transported to the Surry County Jail, where she was held under a $500 secured bond. Medley is scheduled to appear in District Court on Dec. 14.

She also has been banned from all city property.

Michella Huff, city landscaping supervisor, said Monday that the public generally has respected the various displays that decorate Mount Airy each fall. “We’ve never had an issue until this year,” she said.

In addition to the pumpkin-theft situation, lighting equipment — including cords and spotlights — was stolen earlier this month from the front of the Municipal Building on South Main Street, where another fall display is located.

Huff said damage also occurred to an irrigation system at that site, apparently during the weekend.
