A Mount Airy woman is still in the hospital after a tractor trailer ran into her car last week.
Debra Lynn Caudill, 53, of Cleve Street, was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in critical but stable condition last Wednesday morning after a wreck that took place on Highway 89 in Lowgap.
Trooper Anthony Chambers, who investigated the incident, said the woman sustained several injuries but survived. Caudill is still in the hospital, but officials do not know her current condition. Chambers speculated that she probably had to undergo surgery.
The incident occurred when Harold Eugene Funderburk, 60, of Raleigh, was driving his tractor trailer around a curve on Highway 89 South. Chambers said a witness behind the truck said Funderburk’s trailer simply went left of center.
The back of the trailer then hit Caudill’s approaching car and spun it around. Caudill was pinned in the car for around 20 minutes while Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department and Galax Fire and Rescue worked to free her.
According to Chambers, Funderburk was just given a citation for driving left of center. After hitting Caudill’s car, Funderburk stopped at a business at the bottom of the hill and called authorities.
