DANBURY — The North Surry volleyball team has been proving it is the best in the Northwest 1A/2A all season long. Last night, it became official.

The Greyhounds (27-0) won the conference tournament in style Wednesday at host North Stokes, winning by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-16. The Greyhounds did not lose a match during their run through the conference tournament.

The Greyhounds’ Courtney Campbell was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament and Emily Culler and Morgan Bunker were dubbed all-tournament.

Courtney Campbell had 13 kills, followed by Summer Robertson with nine and Sara Parker with eight. Parker, along with Emily Culler, had a team-high seven digs. Kara Hodges had her second straight game with 35 assists. Robertson (5) and Campbell (4) led the victors in blocks. From the service line, Robertson went 11-for-11 with an ace, while Culler went 17-for-18.

Hodges was named the conference Player of the Year. Joining Hodges on the all-conference team were Campbell, Parker, Robertson and Nicole Rumplasch. Bunker and Culler were honorable mention.

For the Cardinals, Keri Fulp recorded nine kills and seven blocks. Kelsey Long had 24 assists and Morgan Chilton, Elizabeth Marshall, Hayley Shelton and Tia Joyce combined for 10 kills. Defensively, Sarah Horton had 10 digs.

“Our level of play tonight against an undefeated team gave us a boost as we head into the state playoffs on Saturday,” East Surry coach Deborah Voigt said. “The girls certainly stepped up their game and even though we lost, I told them they should be very proud of how well they played. I was certainly proud. We're excited about the playoffs and I expect this group of young ladies to succeed the expectations of our coaching staff and our fans.”

Pairings for the state playoffs will be announced today.
