Surry Central’s Allee Taylor hits a hill near the end of the Northwest 1A/2A Conference cross country championship meet Tuesday.
While Boles began to slow down near the end, Taylor sped up, although both girls were feeling the effects of fatigue.
“I was tired after the first mile,” Taylor laughed afterward, still catching her breath several minutes after crossing the finish line. “I just started thinking about all we trained for the whole year and this is my senior year, so don’t worry about how bad it hurts and just go faster. I’m glad I did what I did.”
A tired Taylor was also cognizant enough to remember what her coaches taught her during those practice sessions and that technique was a big reason why she was able to make a push at the end.
“I just remembered what one of my coaches, Jason (Bryant) said. He said just work on the downhills and focus on falling forward on them,” Taylor recalled. “The whole time I thought about that and it helped me concentrate and get by her.”
Jordan Hiatt of Mount Airy also finished in the Top 10, completing the course in 22:04 for eighth place.
The boys race was devoid of drama thanks to Matus Kriska. The Mount Airy junior turned in a typically dominating performance and crossed a finish line littered nearby with severed heads and assorted body parts in 16:46. The amphitheater at Fisher River Park serves as the ending point for cross country meets and will also host a haunted house this weekend, making the scene a bit macabre.
Kriska’s closest competitor finished in 17:17. A two-time state champion in the mile, Kriska had yet to capture a conference cross country title until yesterday.
“It feels good to finally get the weight off my shoulders and it sets me up in a good mental state for regionals and states coming up.”
Surry Central took second overall in the boys team standing behind Bishop McGuinness, while Mount Airy was fifth. The Golden Eagles’ Jacob Fulk placed third in 17:43.
