The Surry County Board of Commissioners plans once again to hold a hearing on an industrial incentive package for a company looking to locate in the county.

The commissioners voted after closed session on Monday night to schedule a public hearing for their Nov. 2 meeting on industrial incentives for Project Tough.

This project involves an as yet unnamed company creating 20 to 30 jobs in Mount Airy. The city of Mount Airy recently approved incentives ranging from $19,000 to $77,200 for the company dubbed Project Tough. This fund amount is in the form of property tax rebates over five years.

According to Chris Knopf, assistant county manager for economic development, the county is proposing to match the city’s amount dollar for dollar.

The amount the city, and possibly county, will give the company depends on the amount of money the company invests in machinery and equipment in Mount Airy. The estimated amount the company will invest is between $1 million and $4 million.

Jan Critz of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership said the county will eventually get to announce the name of the company looking to create the new jobs.

The commissioners also recently approved incentive packages for two other industrial projects. The board held public hearings on Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Corp. and Project Protect at their meetings on Oct. 19 and 20 and then approved packages for both. The county will loan Vaughan-Bassett up to $50,000 for the reopening of its facility in Elkin. The county will purchase a nearly $1 million facility for Project Protect if the company agrees to come.

The Nov. 2 meeting of the board will be held at 6 p.m. at the Surry County Government Center on 118 Hamby Road, Suite 329.
