PILOT MOUNTAIN — North Surry locked up its first Northwest 1A/2A volleyball championship Tuesday by defeating East Surry, 3-0.

Both of the Cardinals’ conference losses this season came at the hands of the Greyhounds, who left Pilot Mountain with a perfect 13-0 conference record, not to mention a 23-0 overall mark.

The Cards stayed close in game one, losing by a 25-21 final. East couldn’t get over the hump in the first game, staying just a few points back before North put them away.

In game two, North Surry came out blazing, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before finishing off East 25-15 and 25-16 in the third and final game.

The Greyhounds rode a strong day at the net, where they finished with 45 kills in 77 attempts with just seven errors.

“We had a really good night hitting the ball,” North Surry coach Shane Slate said. “Those kills were spread over five hitters, so we were mixing things up nicely as well. I wish the rest of our game was that strong. We were up and down in other facets. We need to improve our consistency in those areas.”

Courtney Campbell had a monster day, finishing with 13 kills, including an emphatic slam which closed the door on East in the first game.

North’s Sara Parker was close behind with 11 kills of her own. She was followed by Morgan Bunker (eight kills), Nicole Rumplasch (seven kills) and Summer Robertson (five kills).

Kara Hodges had 38 assists, two blocks and was 13-of-13 from the service line.

For East Surry, freshman Keri Fulp had six kills to lead the way, while seniors Morgan Chilton, Tia Joyce, Elizabeth Marshall, Kelsey Long and Hayley Shelton combined for 14 kills.

“We had everyone on the court contributing statistically tonight against a team that is fundamentally sound and makes very few mistakes,” East Surry coach Deborah Voigt said. “The opportunity to play a team like North Surry certainly challenges us to step up our game.”

The Cardinals drop to 10-2 in conference play and 11-5 overall. They will travel to North Stokes today and to Mount Airy Thursday to finish out their season.

North Surry will finish out with North Stokes Thursday at home.
