A father and son are thankful to be alive after being hit from behind on a moped by a car U.S. 52 just after 10 p.m. Thursday in front of 13 Bones.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Greene, a senior at Mount Airy High School, was thrown through the windshield of the car, then flew through the air, landing on the highway. His father, Bob Greene, 41, who was driving the moped, said he landed on the side of the highway and saw his son laying “in the middle of the road screaming.”

“He said he couldn’t see. Blood was just pouring out of his face,” Greene said. His son was transported by Surry County EMS to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in stable condition.

Greene was transported to Northern Hospital of Surry County with multiple injuries. He was released early Friday morning, but he said he was having trouble walking and was extremely sore.

They were heading to Wal-Mart on U.S. 601 when he said he heard a loud bang and then an engine sound.

Mount Airy Police Officer Vanessa Vaught said a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo hit the moped from the rear. Cleave Dewayne Dowell, 52, of Cana, Va., was the driver of the vehicle.

Greene, who lives at 411 Pippen St., said he just purchased the moped on Oct. 1 and it was not fully paid for. He said he was charged $150 for the moped to be towed and could be charged $20 per day for storage at the police impound lot. He said the man at the impound lot “told me it looked like a deer went through the car’s windshield.”

He had planned to have a yard sale at his aunt’s house on Pippin Street to raise some money during the Autumn Leaves Festival in order to pay for the moped. He was unable to do so Friday because of his injuries.

Both father and son escaped with no broken bones. Michael Greene remained in the hospital Friday night.

“He doesn’t remember what happened,” Greene said about his son’s condition late Friday.

John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, said the Greenes were “extremely lucky.”

Mount Airy Officer Ryan Bennett said he would be reconstructing the crash.

No charges have been filed. The accident is still under investigation.
