DOBSON — A Mount Airy man was pronounced dead after passing motorists found him laying in the middle of U.S. 601 Friday morning.

Eddie Eugene Thomas, 61, of 5038 Rockford St., was found at 5:45 a.m. a short distance from his home near Branch Road, close to the Dobson exit, according to John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services.

“Two motorists found him. When the paramedics got there, they determined that he was in cardiac arrest. He was taken to Northern Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:44 a.m.,” Shelton said.

He said Thomas’ body was sent to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for an autopsy, but no foul play is suspected.
