A middle-school-aged girl was transported to a Winston-Salem hospital after being shot Tuesday afternoon in Mount Airy, according to county emergency officials.
Few details were available Tuesday night after the incident in which a 12- or 13-year-old girl was shot, with investigators with the Mount Airy Police Department reporting that they were still interviewing people and collecting evidence.
Around 4 p.m., emergency crews and law enforcement were dispatched to a residence at 147 W. Church St. in the city.
According to radio transmissions, the alleged shooting suspect was reportedly in front of the residence and the patient was inside the home.
Officers with the Mount Airy Police Department quickly secured the scene so emergency crews with the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Surry EMS and Mount Airy Fire Department could respond for patient care.
According to a radio transmission from a medical responder on the scene, the female patient suffered from a gunshot wound to the face.
According to EMS Shift Supervisor David Speight, she was transported to Northern Hospital of Surry County by Surry EMS paramedics and then transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center by the EMS, because AirCare could not lift off due to weather conditions.
At 11 p.m., investigators with the police department were still interviewing the person they had detained in the shooting incident. The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist in the probe.
The girl was still a patient at Baptist hospital at presstime, with no further information available then.
