DOBSON — The Mitchell River area, recreation incentive grants and water line bids are the main agenda items to be tackled at the next Surry County Board of Commissioners meeting, scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m.

At 6:15 p.m., Darren Rhodes with the Division of Community Assistance will present proposals to the board regarding the Mitchell River area and other outstanding resources. The Surry County Planning Board and citizens of the area are requesting a 75-foot undisturbed buffer along the Mitchell River from Kapp’s Mill upstream to the county line.

A subcommittee of the planning board has been meeting periodically with citizens of the Mitchell River community since the beginning of the year. At the January meeting, the citizens highlighted three major concerns for the area: managed development, river protection or water quality, and maintaining scenic views. They want these points to be considered when future development proposals are created.

Adam McComb, director of Surry County Parks and Recreation, will present recommendations for the Recreation Incentive Grant program at 6:45 p.m. The following groups submitted applications: Lowgap Community Center, Pilot Mountain Youth Soccer Association, Sandy Level Community Council, Shoals Community Recreation Committee, SKATE Mt. Airy, Union Cross Ruritan Club, Veterans Park, Westfield Booster Club, Westfield Ruritan Club and White Plains Ruritans. The board will decide which groups will receive grants for new projects.

The board will also discuss the request of the White Plains Ruritans to replace the gym floor at the White Plains gym.

After a special recognition by the board, Jack Gardin, water and sewer projects coordinator, will present Elkin-Gentry Road water line bids. This is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m.

The county manager and commissioners will then present general county business and go into closed session to discuss economic development and personnel matters.

No public hearings are scheduled; however, an open forum will be held near the beginning of the meeting. The public is welcome to attend the meeting.

The board of commissioners meetings are held at the Surry County Government Center at 118 Hamby Road, Dobson, in suite 329. Any person with a disability needing an accommodation at the meeting should contact the county manager’s office at 401-8201. Elkin residents should contact 366-8201.
