Emergency crews rushed to the Yadkin River off Hardy Road Tuesday afternoon after a passerby noticed a car upside down in the river. No one was found near the vehicle, and it was reportedly stolen from the area Monday.
SILOAM — The Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad was called to the scene of what was thought to be a traffic accident with a car overturned in the Yadkin River Tuesday. But the incident turned out to be a vehicle reported stolen the night before.
At 11:35 p.m. Monday, Pam Liles of 593 Hardy Road reported that noises were heard outside her residence and a 2004 Acura had been stolen.
“We couldn’t tell if there was anybody in it or not,” said Pilot Mountain Rescue Chief Dennis Manuel of the call Tuesday at 12:42 p.m. when a car was discovered in the river. “All we could see was all four wheels sticking out of the water and the undercarriage of the car.”
Manuel said the vehicle was found about a quarter mile from Siloam Road on Hardy Road.
Surry County Sheriff Detective Chad Hutchins was called out to investigate.
Liles reported that the car contained school books, an iPod, a radar detector, a laptop computer, a camera, a camcorder and a cell phone.
Manuel said a wrecker was used to flip the vehicle over and pull it out of the river.
A bridesmaid dress and the laptop were recovered at the scene.
Members of the Shoals and South Surry volunteer fire departments and Surry EMS also responded to the scene.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said the investigation is continuing.
