ARARAT — A fire of undetermined origin heavily damaged a home in Ararat Tuesday night.

Volunteer firefighters were dispatched about 7 p.m. to the residence of Kevin and Amanda Danley at 308 Danley Road in southern Surry County.

They arrived to find smoke visible from outside the structure that was described by one fire official as a “nice double-wide” or modular manufactured home. None of the occupants of the residence, including the Danley couple as well as several children, were there at the time.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, but major damage had occurred. The structure, valued at $98,510 on county tax books, was not ruled a total loss, however.

The Surry County Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate the cause of the fire, but that had not been determined as of Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s still under investigation,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Jason Burkholder, who is conducting the probe. “It originated from the kitchen area,” Burkholder added of the blaze.

Members of the Ararat Volunteer Fire Department were assisted by the South Surry and White Plains volunteer units. The local chapter of the American Red Cross also was represented at the scene.

No injuries were reported from the incident.
