To the Editor:

After several trips to Mt. Airy, I just want to thank the folks of your town for giving my husband and me a place to come where we can forget our stresses and cares and just breath for a while. I have been there during big events, such as the dedication of U.S. 52 when Andy Griffith came home, despite it raining cats and dogs, and during times when things were quiet. Your little town is my haven, and I have often thought of moving to Mt. Airy when I retire.

Aside from the local hospitality, we have made great friends who hold a special place in our hearts ... Charlie and Mary Dowell, Miss Jane “down to the Emporium,” and our very dear friend, Emmett Forrest, who is your most wonderful ambassador. He is, without a doubt, a “gentleman’s gentleman.”

Congratulations on your upcoming Mayberry Days and the ribbon cutting for the Andy Griffith Museum. And, most of all, thank you for the kind and gentle spirit that embodies your little town ... it’s pretty hard to find these days.
