Daber, who has won the World One-Club title four times, will be at Cross Creek Country Club this morning for an 11:30 a.m. demonstration prior to the Mayberry Days Golf Tournament, which begins at 12:15 p.m.
With his trusty Titleist 6-iron, Daber has accomplished more than any other golfer, including a 2-under-par 70 at the 6,200-yard Lochmere Golf Club in Cary in 1987. Without his club altered in any way, Daber will demonstrate how he can sink any shot on the course without needing a caddy.
Special guests scheduled to attend include: Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou), Doug and Rodney Dillard (The Darling Boys), LeRoy McNees (Mayberry on Record), James Best (Jim Lindsey), George Spence (Frank the Fiancé), Karen Knotts (daughter of Barney, the late Don Knotts), Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling), Jackie Joseph “Sweet Romeena” (Ernest T. Bass’ love interest) and James Best, who played Jim Lindsey on two episode and was also Sheriff Rosco P. Coletrain on “Dukes of Hazzard.”
“We’re real excited about the golf tournament, the kick off (to Mayberry Days),” said Deidre Rogers, the co-chairman of the golf tournament.
Daber’s mother, Juanita, grew up in Mount Airy and moved back 10 years ago. When the Surry Arts Council extended an invitation for Daber to hit the links at Cross Creek, he immediately said yes.
When given a full set of clubs to work with, Daber isn’t too shabby. He played as a professional for 10 years, competing all over the world. He now owns and operates a company that manages and markets specialty golf events. After leaving Mount Airy, Daber will head to Hawaii for the Maui Charity Classic next month, where he is slated to give a demonstration. He said he does about 25 exhibitions a year spread all over the country.
A problem with being known as the one-club golfer is that sometimes that moniker gets lost in translation.
“I get some ribbing every now and then for people who have mistaken me that I’m the one-armed guy,” Daber said.
While his competitive days are over, Daber has developed a few famous friends over the years, among them Steve Spurrier, who jokingly calls Daber the one-armed guy. But save your venom, Redskins fans; Daber said he never hit the links with the Old Ball Coach during his stint as the Washington coach, a tenure notorious for Spurrier’s penchant for hitting the links instead of the film room.
