MOUNT AIRY — A production company is filming around the city this week so that “NC Weekend” viewers from across the state can soon learn more about Mount Airy.

John Litschke of J. Martin Productions, Inc. spent Friday filming different places and people of interest in Mount Airy. The footage will be used for a segment in an upcoming broadcast of “NC Weekend,” which airs on UNC-TV three times a week.

“They have a pretty large following ... Usually there’ll be a pretty large influx of calls. I’m hoping it will generate some interest across the state in Mount Airy,” Litschke remarked.

According to Jessica Icenhour, director of tourism for the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, the city hasn’t been featured on a new segment on “NC Weekend” in a few years. This segment, which will run for four to five minutes on the 30-minute show, will focus on the granite quarry in Mount Airy. Litschke will film there on Monday.

But Icenhour said it will also feature a variety of things in Mount Airy, such as the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, Squad Car Tours, and downtown shops and restaurants. “Everything a family can do in a weekend,” she said.

To get footage for the segment, Litschke interviewed visitors, local business owners and organization directors about the city.

“He’s doing great filming,” said Icenhour.

Litschke was approached by UNC-TV to do a segment on North Carolina Granite Corp. He said, “The original interest was in the quarry, but we’re trying to include the whole package.”

Icenhour said, “I guess it’s one of those attractions that many people don’t even know is here.”

J. Martin Productions is operated by John Litschke and his wife, Teresa. They have a show, “Explore Wilkes TV,” and they also do freelance for many other shows and organizations. Litschke said they have had a contract with UNC-TV for six years and have filmed several “NC Weekend” pieces.

Litschke said the date the segment will be aired hasn’t been finalized yet, but he expects it will probably be in a few weeks. “NC Weekend” airs on UNC-TV on Thursdays at 9 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturdays. It is hosted by Deborah Holt, who shares with viewers information about places to visit across the state. Litschke said the segments are often repeated throughout the year.

“I think our viewers will find it very interesting,” he said.
