Mount Airy police are investigating a break-in at Cross Creek Country Club which resulted in thousands of dollars in damages and $500 in stolen cash.

The pro shop at the golf course, the country club’s main office and its bar section were among the areas affected during the crime discovered Wednesday morning.

Police say someone used unknown tools to cut telephone lines at the facility on Greenhill Road and break a door’s glass to gain entry.

Holes were knocked in walls, causing damages estimated at $3,000, with other damage put at $1,500 to glass doors and $500 to an exterior glass window. Another $500 in damage occurred to office doors, with the total figure from the incident listed at $5,500.

In addition to $500 in cash, a Carolinas Golf Association check for $1,800 was stolen.

As of Thursday, no arrests had been made in the case that is under investigation by the detective unit of the Mount Airy Police Department.

Earl Varney of the country club said the incident left Cross Creek employees having to clean up lots of glass and get the damaged walls patched. “It’s pretty well straightened up now,” Varney added Thursday afternoon.

“We just basically had to clean up and keep moving,” said Wyche Bryce, general manager of Cross Creek Country Club. “All the security things were in place. It’s just one of those things that happened.”

No suspects were initially identified, pending further investigation.
