The United Fund of Surry will hold its sixth annual Community Cares Day this Saturday starting at the Mount Airy Rescue Squad.

Brenda Goings, coordinator of Community Care Day and member of the board of directors of the United Fund of Surry, said volunteers are still needed to help out that day.

“Bright and early that morning volunteers will go out to United Fund agencies to help with clean-up, paint up and do fix-up tasks. We have teams from several businesses and service groups already signed up to help, but we could always use more people,” Goings said.

“Everyone who participates will get breakfast and a United Fund T- shirt.”

Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. until noon.

Originally, the Community Cares Day and United Fund kick-off were held at the same time, but last year organizers separated the two, so that they could do Downtown Rocks and still go out into the community and give a helping hand and educate people on what the different agencies do, Goings said.

The plan this year is to meet at the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Frederick Street, at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“We will have biscuits, juice, coffee and T-shirt for all the volunteers who come out,” Goings said.

She said SouthData has a team of volunteers who will work at Mountain Valley Hospice that day. Venture Crew 540 from First Presbyterian Church will work for Surry Medical Ministries. A team from BB&T will go to the Children’s Center of Surry.

Young people from Mount Airy High School Interact Club and employees with Workforce Carolina will go to the American Red Cross and to Yokefellow Ministries at the Jones Resource Center to work.

Volunteers from East Surry High School will help paint the kitchen at the Charles H. Stone Library in Pilot Mountain. The Mount Airy Rotary Club will help with painting at the Surry Arts Council.

Also, Advanced Electronic Services will go out on a work day to help with several projects at the Shepherd’s House.

Goings said she is still in need of helping hands.
