- The 30th Annual Sonker Festival, an event recognizing Surry County’s history, its traditional music heritage and the “sonker,” will be held on the grounds of the historic Edwards-Franklin House, 4132 Haystack Road, Lowgap. Sonker is an Appalachian tern for a deep-dish fruit pie, otherwise known as cobbler. Old-time music and serving of sonker will be from 1 to 5 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Surry County Historical Society. Visitors are invited to bring a chair and enjoy the music, fresh air, friendly people and a second helping of sonker. There is no charge for the entertainment. Visitors pay only for the serving of sonker, made of apples, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, peaches, strawberries and sweet potatoes. Coffee and other beverages will be available for purchase.
