“Did you get the number of that truck?” is a question the Ashe County Huskies probably asked themselves on the way back to West Jefferson Friday night, after running into the wrecking ball that is Mount Airy, 52-7.

Slow start for the Granite Bears?

No problem, especially after forcing three second quarter turnovers and converting them into scores to take a commanding 28-7 lead going into the half.

Mount Airy Coach Kelly Holder said he thought the turnovers before the half were a key to the outcome.

“I thought the second quarter was really big for us,” Holder said. “We didn’t move the ball that well in the first half and found some weak spots in the secondary and tried to take advantage of them and we did two plays back-to-back and kind of drew one play in the dirt there. But I guess you can do that when you’ve got players and we do.”

The stat sheet reads like a roll call, with numerous names dotting the list.

Seniors Luke Wheeler and Andy Temoney once again garnered the early glory, with Wheeler scoring twice and Temoney once, all in the first half.

Wheeler finished with 77 yards rushing on five carries and 64 yards receiving, while Temoney chipped in 75 yards on 13 carries.

Quarterback Ben Hinson had his best game as a starter, completing five of eight passes for 172 and four scores. Wheeler, Anthony Moore, Stephen Hart and Justin Collier were on the receiving end of those scores.

The Granite Bears successfully avoided the dreaded “trap” game after defeating Thomasville 28-21 last week. Coach Kelly Holder called Friday’s effort a “complete game” and said he was pleased with his team’s intensity.

Bears linebacker Stephen Hart said he and his fellow seniors wanted to make sure no “traps” were sprung to put a kink in Mount Airy’s season.

“We just wanted to make sure we would come out with the same intensity we did at Thomasville,” Hart said. “All the coaches and captains made it real clear that we needed to come out with the same intensity and just fire off the ball, scrape down and the defensive line did a good job of filling their holes.”

Mount Airy limited Ashe to minimal yardage throughout the game, with quarterback Dalton Lewis completing just six of 19 passes for 91 yards.

Wide receiver Greyson Wells hauled in 81 of those yards to pace the Huskies.

Mount Airy will next travel to Monroe to take on the 3A Parkwood Rebels. Parkwood enters the game at 1-1 after defeating Cox Mill 45-0 Friday while the Bears will look to keep their 3-0 record unblemished.
