PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry was strong at the top of its lineup, but North Stokes was able to hang tough and defeat the Cardinals, 6-3, Thursday.

East Surry No. 1 Megan Shelton got the Cardinals off to a good start with a win over Jordan Wilkins (6-0, 6-1). Marcy Matthews at No. 2 pulled out a win over Haley Pack after three sets with scores of 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

However, the Vikings weathered that storm, and won three of the next four singles matches and two of three doubles to secure the win.

“A lot of games were real close,” East Surry coach Phil Jordan said. “(The match) could have gone either way.”

East Surry (2-1, 2-1 Northwest 1A/2A) travels to Surry Central Monday. Jordan added that yesterday’s decision could benefit his team down the road.

“For us it was a good match,” he said. “North Stokes has a very good team. It gives us a measuring stick. We have a long ways to go, but I feel we’re improving.”

DOBSON — Thanks to a pair of doubles wins, the Surry Central girls tennis squad was able to outlast Wilkes Central for a 5-4 non-conference victory Thursday.

The Golden Eagles No. 1, Tara Dockery, paced her team with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top of the singles lineup, but Wilkes Central was able to fight back and tie the score at 3-3 heading into doubles.

Dockery teamed with Taylor Casey and Kayla Feeny partnered with Hunter Marion to seal the Golden Eagles’ victory.
