Mount Airy’s Sam Welch (21) fights an Elkin player for possession Tuesday.
Mount Airy came out slow and Elkin took advantage of it, winning a soccer match, 5-1, Tuesday. The Granite Bears’ lone score came when Torrance Hamilton was assisted by Tyler Wall.

“We came out lethargic,” Mount Airy coach Eric Leathers said. “We have an inexperienced goalie — who’s been playing great — and he lets a couple tough shots get by and we’re down.”

The good news for the Granite Bears (1-2) is the game was non-conference. Mount Airy also has another non-conference clash Thursday at Alleghany to get the kinks worked out before the Northwest 1A/2A season heats up next month. Leathers said some changes may need to be made before Sept. 1.

“There’s a lot of kids who are young and inexperienced and wanting to play,” he said. “They’re going to challenge the starters in practice.”

East Surry 2, East Wilkes 1

RONDA — With 14 minutes left in regulation, East Wilkes tied its game against East Surry at 1-1. Unfortunately for East Wilkes, last night’s game turned out like the past few with East Surry, meaning the Cardinals had an answer.

“We had put pressure on their defense all night, so I was confident in our offense,” East Surry coach Bill Hart said. “I was hoping we would capitalize on it.”

Sure enough, East Surry answered two minutes later when Jonah Easter assisted on Damian Padron’s second goal of the night to give the Cardinals a 2-1 victory. The back-and-forth game is what Hart has come to expect when facing East Wilkes.

“It’s like it always is with East Wilkes,” he said. “It’s like that the last six times we played them. It’s like a punch and counterpunch with us two.”

East Surry (2-1) travels to West Davidson Monday before beginning its Northwest 1A/2A conference schedule Tuesday by hosting West Stokes.
