KERNERSVILLE — The North Surry girls volleyball team’s match against Bishop McGuinness was a fast one Tuesday where, as Greyhounds coach Shane Slate put it, “...both teams scored points with a minimum amount of contacts.”

What made the match go even quicker was the Greyhounds completed a three-game sweep, with scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-18 to give Bishop (3-1, 2-1 Northwest 1A/2A) its first loss of the season.

Kara Hodges had 20 assists and impressed Slate by finding the correct hitters to score points. Courtney Campbell had six kills, while Nicole Rumplasch added five kills to go with four blocks. Morgan Bunker went 20-for-22 with five aces.

North Surry (3-0, 1-0) hosts Alleghany today at 4:30 p.m.

Surry Central blanks Wildcats

DOBSON — Surry Central picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, defeating West Stokes in straight sets 3-0.

The Golden Eagles won 25-19, 25-15 and 25-18, respectively, off strong all-around play.

Brittany Tolbert had seven kills for coach Leah McKinney’s team, followed by Jennifer Coe with five and Samantha Mosley and Whitney Joyner with four apiece.

Alysha Shelton added 15 digs in the win.

“The girls played as a team tonight,” McKinney said. “We played very well defensively and we knew what to expect from West Stokes’ offense. We got the lead early and kept it throughout each game.”

On Monday, the Golden Eagles didn’t have as much luck with non-conference opponent West Wilkes, falling to the Blackhawks 3-1.

Central dropped the opening game 25-14 before winning a tight second game 25-23.

Lauren Key had 16 assists while Shelton came up with 24 digs for the Golden Eagles. Tolbert finished with eight kills to lead her team in the loss.
