A Mount Airy man has been charged with robbing a local restaurant and attempting to cut its owner with a knife.

Joseph Norman Sales, 51, of 340 Snowhill Drive, is accused of armed robbery, a felony, in the incident at Coppola’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant in the Lowes hardware shopping center on South Andy Griffith Parkway.

It occurred about 11:10 p.m. Saturday near the restaurant’s closing time.

Sales also was charged with two misdemeanor offenses, assault with a deadly weapon and interfering with emergency communications.

At one point, Sales allegedly tried to cut the restaurant owner, Michele Coppola of Pilot Mountain, with a knife and severed the telephone cord during a 911 call attempted during the incident.

Miscellaneous pizza and beer valued at $30 were stolen, according to arrest records.

Sales was released on a written promise to appear in Surry District Court on Sept. 29.
