According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrolman Brent Jones, Chelsie Lynn Thompson, 18, of West Lebanon Street, was killed in the wreck. John Shelton, Surry County Emergency Services director, said she died at the scene of the wreck.
According to Jones’ report, the car was being driven by a 14-year-old male from Mount Airy.
The crash happened on Willis Gap Road, near Riverside Drive, around 1 a.m. Jones’ report stated the 2005 Hyundai was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line, then left the highway and crashed into the tree.
In addition to Thompson, passengers in the vehicle were Christopher Jordan, 18, who was in the back seat with Thompson, and Joshua Ingalls, 16, both of Mount Airy.
Shelton said the driver, Jordan and Ingalls were all transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in critical but stable condition.
Shelton said it appeared Thompson and the other occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
“With the amount of impact and vehicle intrusion, it caused significant injury,” he said of the crash. He explained that when the front and other parts of a vehicle are smashed inward significantly into the passenger compartment of a car, severe injury and even death can occur even with the proper use of seat belts and other safety devices.
Jones said Wednesday night that he planned on meeting with the District Attorney’s office today to determine if any charges will be filed.
Four Way Volunteer Fire Department, the Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry County Emergency Services responded to the call.
Editor’s note: Although the driver’s name has been disclosed and is on the wreck report, which is public record, at this time, The Mount Airy News has chosen not to release his name due to his age.
