MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Elaine Lee McDavitt Slate, 79, of 126 Nevada Ave., Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Roy Slate, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born Feb. 4, 1930, in Passaic County, N.J., to the late Henry Sealey and Lillian Strom McDavittt. She was retired from Kentucky Derby Hosiery, was of the Methodist faith and was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Jilene Gwyn of Mount Airy and Debbie Burdge of Effort, Pa.; a son, Michael Dilius of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Robin Higgins of Sunset Beach and Sandy Southern of Georgia; a stepson, John Slate of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Corbin Gwyn of Mount Airy, Melissa Marlett and Lauralee Serfass and David Surfass, both of Effort; two great-grandchildren, Madix Marlett of Pennsylvania and Leah Serfass of Pennsylvania; and three close loving friends, Joanne Thompson of Eden, Edna Mounts of Mount Airy and Betty McKinney of Mount Airy. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by an infant son, Baby Johnny Dilius; a sister, Beverly Shopwerth; and stepson, Bob Slate. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy conducted by the Rev. Roscoe Creed and the Rev. Johnny Johnson.
