SLATE
PINNACLE — Mavis LaVonne (Kruse) Slate of Pinnacle, who was born Aug. 22, 1937, on a farm near Rushmore, Nobles County, Minn., went to her eternal home on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, in Winston-Salem. Mavis attended one-room schools in Murray and Chippewa counties, Minn., and Maynard, Minn., High School, graduated from American Institute of the Air (later CBS Broadcasting School), and was involved in the music and recording business with Fabor Robinson, Webb Pierce and others. Mavis and Ray operated the Backwoods Drive-In in Westfield; more recently she was a devoted, loving health-care provider. Mavis was a devout Christian member of the Friendly Chapel Church of Pilot Mountain. Mrs. Slate is survived by beloved stepdaughter, Raynell Slate; beloved grandchildren, Rachelle Lilly and Scott Jordan; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Kruse Badeaux (Floyd) of Port Arthur, Texas, and Merlaine Kruse Kroening (Norman) of Palmer, Ark.; sister-in-law, Geneva Kruse of Seymour, Texas; five nephews, the Rev. Kevin Badeaux of Pt. Arthur, Gary Don Kruse of Seymour, Marty Kruse of Keller, Texas, Craig Kruse of Denton, Texas, and Gregg Kruse of Seymour; and four nieces, Corliss Badeaux of Lake Charles, La., Bonnie Gilchrist of Bryan, Texas, Doreen Badeaux of Port Arthur and Jeannie Seligman of Houston, Texas. Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Slate; her parents, Jake and Enger (Matson) Kruse; and brother, Donald. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain, with funeral services to follow with burial in the Slate Family Cemetery. Cox-Needham Funeral Home is assisting the Slate family.
