Town hall meeting offers access to debate

Area residents will be able to have their say regarding proposed national health care reform when Rep. Virginia Foxx hosts a telephone town hall meeting Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.

All area residents will be able to participate by calling 1-877-850-4133 at that time, then entering the password FOXX (3699) when prompted to do so.

While we’re somewhat disappointed Foxx has chosen to do this by telephone rather than face-to-face with her constituents, we are at least heartened that she will be seeking input from those she represents in Washington.

And we hope many of the people who live here do take part, because this is one of the most pressing concerns of our time.

Health care in America is out of control. Costs are sky high, with more and more Americans — including, we suspect, a goodly number of people in Mount Airy and Surry County — simply unable to afford basic health care or medical insurance which would help pay for that care.

While Congressional representatives enjoy health insurance that is second-to-none, and multi-millionaire athletes who are injured on the field of play get the absolute best, most up-to-date medical care simply so they can return to competition, more and more hardworking, average Americans struggle simply to pay for a check-up or antibiotics for their child’s ear infection.

Physicians, dentists, and health insurance executives generally enjoy high annual salaries, living in the better parts of towns across America, while their patients and customers are sometimes left choosing between food or medicine.

This is wrong, and significant reform needs to be brought about.

At the same time, forcing Americans to change their insurance plans, or further eliminating physician choice, runs contrary to that independent spirit so prevalent in American history.

Forcibly taking away something some Americans are happy with, and increasing the significant national debt left over from President George W. Bush’s administration, should not be a viable option either.

As is often the case in politics, we may have to figure out which is the lesser of two evils.

What’s the eventual answer? That’s something for the voters to determine through their participation in forums such as Foxx’s town hall meeting, and ultimately through what they do at the ballot box.

We only ask that people participate in this important national discussion, and that they do so looking at the big picture, what is best for the most Americans while not leaving out any particular socioeconomic minority.

We also ask that everyone participating in this do so with an open-mind, free of political party loyalty, and with a willingness to compromise so that some sort of meaningful, helpful reform can be brought about.

Thursday night is your chance to do just that.
