A Virginia teen has become the second person charged in a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in Mount Airy six months ago.

Megan Rose Leech, 16, of 3824 Friends Mission Road in Ararat in Patrick County, came to the Mount Airy Police Department Friday to be served with a warrant on a charge of fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in a death. That offense is a felony.

Leech is accused in a late-January collision that claimed the life of Willis Filmore Covington, 78, of 1619 N. Main St.

A 1999 Cadillac Catera driven by Covington was struck by a 1996 Chrysler Sirus traveling at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Rockford and Worth streets late on the evening of Jan. 29, investigators have said.

The elderly man died at the scene of the collision that caused massive damage. No one was found in the Chrysler after it came to rest about 100 feet from the intersection. But about a day later, John Eric Tate, 23, of 873 Brim Road, was found hiding in a house on McBride Road and arrested on a charge of fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in a fatality.

Tate had suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

A police officer who issued the offenses against both Tate and Leech could not be reached Monday for additional details, including how Leech came to be implicated in the case six months after the accident and her relationship to Tate.

Leech is free on a $5,000 unsecured bond, pending a Sept. 1 appearance in Surry District Court.

Tate is scheduled to appear in court today.
