DOBSON — The Surry County Board of Education will meet Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. at the school system’s central office in Dobson, with the school’s 1:1 laptop program topping the agenda.

With the full implementation of the initiative on the horizon, board members will be asked to approve a master lease agreement with Dell. Once the lease agreement is approved, administrators can continue with finalizing the order for the laptops. In addition, the board will be asked to approve a five-year lease for Total Traffic Control, a system from Converged Networks which will allow the school system to better manage security, e-mail archiving, filtering and power to PCs. The lease would cost $36,000 per year.

The school board will also approve the new boundary lines made necessary because of the two new elementary schools, one in the Central district and one in the Pilot district. The new lines have been on display at the central office for the past month.

The board will also be asked to once again approve a contract with Yadkin Valley Economic Development District Inc., also know as YVEDDI, to provide transportation to students when necessary. In addition, the board will be asked to renew the contract with Hines Fleet Safety Consulting Inc., which would provide for the inspection of charter bus companies used by the school system. The company provides the school system a list of 20 charter bus companies that it inspects twice a year.

The board will be asked to approve a request for self-funding of the employee dental plan. Due to a 20 percent increase in premiums aver a two-year period, the school system has been forced to look at ways to stabilize the district cost but still maintain the same level of services.

Surry Early College High School’s calendar for the spring semester needs to be updated because of a change in Surry Community College’s spring break dates and an additional day for a spring holiday.

The board will be asked to approve a resolution dealing with the Qualified School Construction Bonds program that is part of the American Recovery Reinvestment Act detailing that it will use the funds for Pilot Mountain Middle School for construction, rehabilitation or repair. The resolution is required for the school system to receive the funds.
