Tim VanHoy, 42, was rushed by AirCare to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center early Tuesday after collapsing inside the office at the Habitat ReStore on West Pine Street.
According to his family, VanHoy suffered a heart attack. As of Thursday afternoon, VanHoy’s condition had not improved, according to his brother, Barry.
“We are just waiting on a miracle,” he said.
“They can’t do any type of exploratory work right now because his heart is so weak. They don’t know exactly what brought it on. They said he might have had some type of infection or possibly pneumonia. But they don’t know — they are treating him as hard and fast as they can go. He hasn’t made any progress,” Barry said.
It’s no secret that VanHoy is well-known and well-liked in the community. His brother said he is thankful for the many people who are praying for his brother and his family.
“I know that there are so many people he has been able to reach through his ministry with Habitat. It’s unbelievable how all of them are pulling together,” VanHoy said.
He said that a prayer chain for his brother has reached as far away as Maryland.
“Prayer — that’s all we can really ask for now.”
He said Tim’s wife, Debbie, and daughter, Taylor, are holding up pretty well under the circumstances.
Taylor is posting updates about her dad every chance she gets on Facebook, and Tim’s Facebook page is filled with friends sending their prayers and hope for a recovery.
His brother said Tim had gotten big into Facebook recently and had found some long, lost relatives.
“He called them up and it was the first time they had heard from him in a long time, then this happened,” Barry VanHoy said.
“We know the good Lord has a plan and hopefully that plan is for a miracle. He has done it before, He can do it with Tim.”
VanHoy said Dr. Jason Stopyra, an emergency medicine physician at Northern Hospital of Surry County, did a great job and is responsible for saving his brother’s life.
“He’s the reason Tim still has a chance. He worked very hard on Tim. He lost him twice in the Emergency Department and brought him back. He just would not quit and would not give up on him,” VanHoy said.
VanHoy said Stopyra was on his way to work when he heard the call.
“He drove over to the store in his personal vehicle and started working on him right there. He rode with him in the ambulance working on Tim on the way to the hospital. He is a super, wonderful guy. I’ll never forget that, he is such a blessing,” VanHoy said.
Sherry Russo, an employee with Habitat for Humanity, said she was present at the time VanHoy collapsed.
The Habitat ReStore reopened on Wednesday, Russo said. The store is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Russo said customers have been asking about VanHoy every day.
“There’s been an outpouring of prayer for Tim. He is well-known in the community. Everyone is praying for him,” said Russo.
