DOBSON — Beginning this fall, Surry Community College will be offering a new program to students.

The business technologies division has taken the necessary steps to start an entrepreneurship program that offers both a degree and a certificate.

The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to become self-employed business owners. Students will take classes in entrepreneurial concepts, innovation and creativity, business funding and marketing. Instructors also hope to bring area business owners into the classroom to talk with students about their experiences.

The program is designed to accommodate students in any discipline from the viticulture and enology program to cosmetology and carpentry. It will teach students how to go about starting a new business while the college offers resources such as its small business center to help move the process along.

The degree program requires 69 credit hours and follows a detailed path in preparing students to start their own businesses. The certificate program requires only 16 credit hours and provides an overview of the subject area.

As a result of continually rising unemployment rates, more people are becoming interested in starting their own businesses. What used to be seen as a risky endeavor is now becoming more appealing as the security of traditional employment is diminishing in today’s poor economy.

“This innovative program is being taught by dedicated instructors who are very excited about helping students achieve their goal of starting their own business,” said Hilda Hall, chair of the business technologies division.

Registration for the entrepreneurship program is now open to all new and current students. Those with further questions can visit the SCC Web site at www.surry.edu and follow the links to the program’s site.
