To the Editor,

In reference to the recent newspaper article on Unclaimed Cash in North Carolina, our representative, Sarah Stevens, has done an excellent job in researching and bringing this to people’s attention. Perhaps by this time many have checked the list on line and found their name or someone they know. However, many times people get busy and don’t take the time to check it out or think their name couldn’t possibly be on the list. You would be surprised!

I started checking this unclaimed money list on line back in 2002 and was totally shocked at the people owed money here in Surry County. I spent hours checking names and calling friends, relatives and people I knew. I called one of my friends and they later received a check for $10,000 and another one $8,000. Numerous others received lesser amounts. In all about $100,000 was collected simply by me contacting these friends.

There are companies all over the Internet wanting to charge people for this service. Remember it is absolutely free and a person should never have to pay anyone to help get their money. Once you find your name or family member’s name on the list it is very simple to get the form printed on the computer. After sending it to the NC State Treasurer’s office you usually get your check within a couple of months. If someone tells you your name is on the list and you do not use a computer it is simple to call The State Treasurer’s Office at 1-919-508-1000 and after verifying who you are they will send you the form.

Since this unclaimed money list is available to the general public on line I am wondering if these names could be printed in the newspaper or displayed in some public area so people could have a better chance to collect their money. I believe this would really make a difference in Surry County, especially at a time when a lot of people are out of work and needs extra cash. 1.2 Million dollars is a lot of money for Surry County!
