n The Galax Recreation Center will offer a new session of Carolina Shag classes beginning July 29. Classes for beginners and seasoned shaggers will be taught by Bruce Leonard and Kay Weddle. The beginner class will cover the basic shag step, female turn, male turn and start position. The beginners II class will introduce the belly roll and pivot step. Advanced students will learn more advanced steps, turns and basic variations. All classes will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. Individuals and couples are welcome. n The Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be held at Ashe Park in Jefferson. A competition will be held with bluegrass and old time musicians in band and a dance competition for all ages. Prize money totals at over $3,600. Bring a chair or blanket and a sweater. Limited camping is available. Tickets are $10 for each night or $15 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are free.

n A benefit motorcycle ride, sponsored by the Bannertown VFD Ladies Auxiliary, will depart from Bannertown VFD, 124 Reeves Mill Road, at 9 a.m. Sign ups begin at 8 a.m. Cars are welcome to ride. n Carroll County Public Schools will hold an open house for grades prekindergarten through ninth from noon to 6 p.m. This will give parents and students the opportunity to receive information about the school year, meet teachers and tour the school. Textbooks will be provided for students at no charge. An instructional materials fee of $5 will be collected from all students in addition to certain curriculum area fees. Fees are payable on this date for students K-7 and on the first day of school for students 8-12.
