Mr. and Mrs. H. Lee Merritt Jr. of 726 Country Club Road, Mount Airy, announce the engagement of their daughter, Emma Claire, to Powell Keeling Baggett, son of Dr. and Mrs. Clifford Baggett of Raleigh and Mrs. Gayle Watson of Raleigh.

The bride-elect is a graduate of Salem Academy, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Wake Forest School of Law. She is employed with Tuggle-Duggins Law Firm in Greensboro.

The bridegroom-to-be is a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Va., and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a student at Elon University School of Law.

A wedding is planned for 5 p.m. Oct. 17 at Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy with a reception at the home of the bride’s parents.
