Millennium Charter Academy has spearheaded the creation of a new regional conference.

Ten schools have officially signed on with two more awaiting administrative approval to join the Central Carolina Conference for Academics, Athletics and Arts.

These schools, both public and private, are divided into two divisions based on geographic proximity. The East Division is comprised of Bethany Community Middle School, Clover Garden, Downtown Middle School, Forsyth Home Educators, Guilford Preparatory School and Weslyan Christian Academy. The West Division includes Bridges Charter School, Forsyth Academy, Forsyth Country Day School, Millennium Charter Academy, Millers Creek Christian School and Summit School.

There will be yearly divisional tournaments, as well as conference championships. The by-laws allow for two more schools to join with the approval of the conference board of directors, bringing the total number of allowed teams to 14.

As the conference name denotes, this is an association not only geared for athletics, but also for academic and artistic competitions and performances among its member schools.

“This conference has been a dream of mine for about five years,” said Kirby McCrary, headmaster of Millennium Charter Academy. “Our new athletic director, Steve Braune, quickly acquired the same vision, and did a lot to make it happen. So, this was a joint effort, which even included my wife, Tammy, who wisely recommended that we include the arts in the planning.”

The athletic directors representing the various schools, along with the chief administrators from Millennium Charter Academy and Bethany Community Middle School, have been meeting for five months discussing the structure, the finances, the value of sportsmanship for players and their families, regulations of play, their underlying beliefs and preparing the foundational document to perpetuate their ideas.

“This is a great group of guys with whom to work. With the synergy developing, this should be a very strong conference,” said Steve Braune, the newly elected president of the conference.

Play starts this fall with soccer and volleyball. Other sports to be included are basketball, wrestling, tennis, golf, track, cross-country, volleyball and possibly swimming. The conference hopes to include girls’ field hockey and boys’ lacrosse.

Among other events, there will also be interaction among the schools for geography bees, spelling bees, touring art shows and musical performances.
