The American Legion baseball playoffs are fast approaching with one Surry Pride team sure of its place while another is still in limbo.

The Surry Pride senior team will kick off its postseason run Friday in Pilot Mountain against second seeded Randolph County.

Surry, the seventh seed of eight at 8-10 in conference play, lost both games to Randolph during the season, one a close 6-3 contest, while the other was a wash out, with the Pride losing 14-3.

The senior legion conference playoffs are a best three out of five format, with the games normally rotating between home fields.

The Pride won’t have that luxury however, as due to a scheduling conflict, Surry will open the series with Randolph at home, but then be forced to play two consecutive away games thereafter.

Surry coach Barry Hall said Randolph is a veteran team with two pitchers who are on the collegiate level.

“They have a seasoned ball club,” Hall said. “Last year they won the regular season, won our playoffs, competed in the state tournament and won it and played in the regional and won it. They are a veteran legion program. In the past we’ve played them hard in the playoffs but never beat them. We’ll just see. All you have to do is put together three good games in a row and anything can happen.”

Surry will host Randolph Friday for Game 1, then travel Saturday and Sunday. If necessary Game 4 will be played in Pilot Mountain, with Game 5 moving to Randolph.

All games are set for a 7 p.m. start time.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Surry junior legion coach Colt Boyd had no more information on his team’s possible playoff position than a random person on the street.

Unlike the senior division, the junior division does not have a conference tournament. The top two teams from each of the three conferences in Area 3 (of four) plus two wildcards meet to advance to the state wide tournament.

As of Tuesday, Boyd’s team sat somewhere near third in its conference, behind first-place High Point and second-place Winston-Salem Green. The junior Pride are hoping to be one of the two third-place teams to get a shot at a playoff run as a wildcard.

Boyd hasn’t even received confirmation of the date his team would start it’s playoff series if it did in fact qualify.

More information on the legion playoffs will follow as available.
