Jackie Ray Lundy, 34, of 407 Pine Terrace Road, Mount Airy, and Shane Eugene Fletcher, 44, of Crutchfield Court, Dobson, are in custody on felony robbery and assault offenses.
News reports from the coastal area indicate that the victim was visiting Ocean Isle Beach in Brunswick County when the incident occurred. Her injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
After the robbery, Lundy and Fletcher traveled into South Carolina, where they were arrested Friday morning by officers with the Mullins Police Department.
While their vehicle initially was stopped due to an improper turn, with the driver also in violation of South Carolina’s seat belt law and both men committing open-container offenses, a search eventually linked them to the more serious crimes.
A checkbook belonging to the Kansas woman was discovered on the rear seat of the car along with a lock-blade knife in the open position. The weapon, as well as clothing of one of the suspects, also contained what was believed to be blood.
After receiving consent to search the vehicle, Mullins police also located a driver’s license and identification card of the victim.
Both men were taken into custody on the minor violations, and while they were at the Marion County Detention Center further investigation confirmed their alleged link to the North Carolina robbery and stabbing.
That led Brunswick County officials to respond and collect evidence and statements, with the two suspects awaiting extradition to North Carolina at last report.
Lundy had been charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle in Mount Airy on May 26 and released under a $2,500 secured bond.
