A Mount Airy man has been jailed on a felony charge of assaulting a handicapped person with a metal cane, according to city police.

The Saturday arrest of Mark Wayne Ransdell, 46, of Davis Rooms at 120 W. Pine St., occurred after police responded to a fight in progress in a parking lot behind 174 W. Pine St. about 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Two alleged assault victims told police, who said the suspect fled before they arrived at the scene, that the man had pushed them and then used a metal cane to assault both before leaving. Injuries were caused to Gary Dean Smith and Michael Gray Jessup, also residents of West Pine Street.

Jessup said he is handicapped from a stroke that has caused paralysis and added Monday that he suffered a punctured lung when pushed into a trash can during the altercation.

Warrants for one count each of felonious aggravated assault on a handicapped person and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon subsequently were issued against Ransdell, who was arrested Saturday evening after being located on nearby Franklin Street.

Ransdell was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 5.
