A Mount Airy man has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and taking indecent liberties with a minor, according to city police.

Ricardo Reyes, 20, of 1302 Park Drive, was being held Friday in the Surry County Jail on the felony offenses in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond.

Reyes was taken into custody this week in connection with an alleged assault on a female juvenile earlier this month, according to Detective P.M. Barker of the Mount Airy Police Department, who investigated the incident.

The kidnapping offense relates to allegations that the suspect held the victim against her will at a location in the city for the purpose of committing indecent liberties.

“He wouldn’t allow the victim to leave the residence,” Detective J.A. Freeman said.

No other information was released about the juvenile, including her age or possible relationship to Reyes.

Under North Carolina law, taking indecent liberties with a minor involves willfully engaging or attempting to engage in any immoral, improper, indecent, lewd or lascivious act with a child of either sex under the age of 16 years for sexual purposes.

After Barker’s investigation led to warrants being issued in the case, Reyes was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after police spotted the wanted man riding in a vehicle and stopped it on Rockford Street.

Reyes is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on July 23.
