With the frenzy of activity in May this year, officials in charge of hosting the CROP Hunger Walk have decided to move the date to later in the year to set that event apart from other charitable events.

The past two years, a CROP Hunger Walk was held in Mount Airy on the third Sunday afternoon in May. In 2009, the date for the event is Nov. 1, according to Mount Airy First Baptist Church pastor, Dr. Roger Gilbert.

“Having the event in the fall moves it away from competition with several other fundraising walks. The fall is also a time when we begin thinking about Thanksgiving,” he said. “Doing something to remember and assist the less fortunate is a meaningful and practical way of expressing gratitude for our blessings.

“The timing is also significant because this will be All Saints Day. What better time to demonstrate that all of God’s people can get involved in helping one another,” Gilbert said.

CROP Hunger walks are sponsored by Church World Service, an organization with a reputation and history of helping hurting people around the world. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds of the local CROP Hunger Walk comes back to the local community to help with local efforts to assist the hungry.

“Mark your calendar for Nov. 1 and ask your church and your friends to put it on their calendar,” Gilbert said.
