On Saturday, the Pride (3-7) went to Randolph County and fell, 6-3, while mustering three hits. Andrew Pelfrey drove in one of the runs. The others were scored on a bases loaded walk and subsequent wild pitch.
However, three runs is not a bad tally considering the competition. Randolph County threw Steven Davis, who worked his way into the UNC-Wilmington rotation this spring as a true freshman. Randolph County’s pitchers combined to strike out 17 Surry batters.
“The two pitchers for Randolph, they just dominated,” Surry coach Barry Hall said. “We had two errors in the first inning which cost us big time. After that we settled down and played pretty good.”
Neither Surry nor Randolph County plated a run over the final three innings.
The next day, the Pride traveled to Eastern Randolph and were beaten, 9-4. Shane Johnson finished 2-for-5 with a steal and Austin McLamb pitched scoreless innings from the fourth through the seventh.
In both weekend games, Surry had trouble mounting an offense late in games.
“Our bats are a little silent right now,” Hall said. “We’ve got to find a way to win on the road.”
Surry will be the visitor in each of its next five games. The Pride was supposed to travel to Thomasville Friday, but that game was rained out and rescheduled for June 24.
Surry plays at West Forsyth tonight at 6.
