The board agreed to appoint Commissioner Lana Brendle as the finance officer until the position could be filled permanently. Town Manager Lynn Burcham also served as the finance officer before she was placed on non-disciplinary suspension without pay following allegations of misappropriated funds last week.
Commissioner Wayne Atkins is temporarily serving as the town clerk.
The board also agreed to a resolution to approve a bond order to interconnect water to Mount Airy for $911,000. The board also agreed to approve BB&T bank as a lender for the interconnect project in the amount of $911,000 with a little over 2 percent interest.
Last year, the town received a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Rural Center for the $1.4 million water agreement with Mount Airy. The agreement is to extend the town’s water to connect with that of Mount Airy.
The board also approved an amendment that reflects that Surry County put $275,000 toward a public works building.
The board went into closed session to address the qualifications of a perspective candidate for a position with the town.
