The Surry American Legion Post 123 baseball team came about as close as a team could to winning over the weekend, but fell short three times.

On Friday, Surry fell twice to visiting Winston-Salem by counts of 5-4 and 3-0, respectively. The first game featured a total of nine errors. Surry scored all of its runs in the fourth inning of Game 1 and two of those runs came from a Troy Jessup homer.

In the second game, neither team committed an error and Surry had three hits to Winston’s four. However, one of Winston’s hits made the difference when Mike Axe crushed a three-run home run in the top of the third. Axe, who attends R.J. Reynolds High School, also homered in the first game.

Surry traveled to High Point Saturday evening and lost, 6-4. Jessup and Jacob Barnes each doubled in defeat. Surry again fell victim to the long ball, as High Point’s Kyle Brandenburg homered to tie the game before Matt Dillon’s walkoff sealed the win. Both bombs came in the bottom of the ninth.

Winning pitcher Ethan Ogburn is a North Carolina State recruit.

Surry (1-4) is scheduled to host Kernersville tonight and Burlington Wednesday. Both games begin at 7 p.m. at East Surry High School.
